NAMENDA XR works differently than other medications for Alzheimer's

There are currently 2 types of medications available for Alzheimer's disease. These medications work differently. Often these medications are used together in patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. This is called combination therapy.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) are thought to work by slowing the breakdown of a chemical in the brain called acetylcholine. This chemical is involved in learning and memory. These medications include Aricept® (donepezil), Razadyne® (galantamine HBr), and Exelon® (rivastigmine)*

NAMENDA XR is a glutamate pathway modifier (memantine hydrochloride) that may help regulate the abnormal activity of glutamate—another chemical in the brain that is important for learning and memory.

There is no evidence that NAMENDA XR or an AChEI prevents or slows the underlying disease process in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

Two things you should tell the doctor about your loved one before taking NAMENDA XR

1

All your loved one's past and present medical conditions. These include seizure disorders, difficulty passing urine, and liver, kidney, or bladder problems.

2

Other medications your loved one may be taking—including those without a prescription. Certain medications, changes in diet, or medical conditions may affect the amount of NAMENDA XR in the body and possibly increase side effects.

What if my loved one has never taken NAMENDA?

If your loved one is not currently taking NAMENDA twice a day, it's recommended to start NAMENDA XR according to the pictured schedule. The patient should stay on the same dose for at least 7 days. The dose should be increased only if the previous dose was well tolerated.

For patients with severe renal impairment, the recommended dose is 14 mg once a day.

Other things to keep in mind if you are caring for a loved one who is taking NAMENDA XR

1

If your loved one skips a dose of NAMENDA XR, do not double up on the next dose. Take only the next dose as scheduled. If the person you care for has forgotten to take NAMENDA XR for several days, do not administer the next dose until you have talked to the doctor.

2

If your loved one is allergic (hypersensitive) or has had a bad reaction to memantine, he or she should not take NAMENDA XR. Memantine is the active substance in NAMENDA XR.
